Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ἀλλογενής , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ἀλλογενής of another race ( < ancient Greek ἀλλο- allo- comb. form + -γενής : see -gen comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare later allogenous adj., allogeneity n.
rare before 19th cent.
Different or distinct in kind; (in later use frequently) spec. belonging to or consisting of a distinct ethnic group.
