The rough hound or sandy dog, Scyliorhinus canicula (family Scyliorhinidae), a small shark commonly found in the north-east Atlantic; also called small or lesser spotted dogfish. Also: (with distinguishing word) any of various other small sharks, chiefly of the families Scyliorhinidae, Squalidae, and Triakidae; esp. the nursehound or bull huss, Scyliorhinus stellaris, of the North East Atlantic (also called large or greater spotted dogfish), and the spur-dog, Squalus acanthias, of the Atlantic and Pacific (also called spiny dogfish; = piked dogfish n. at piked adj.1 Compounds). Cf. dog n.1 4.Also, in plural (also dogfish sharks): these fishes collectively; spec. those constituting the family Squalidae.
