Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin allocūtus, alloquī.
Etymology: < classical Latin allocūtus, past participle of alloquī allocute v.In post-classical Latin allocutus is used as adjective in the senses ‘accused’ (from late 13th cent. in British sources) and ‘addressed, questioned’ (from early 14th cent. in British sources).
Law.
A formal demand made by a judge of a person convicted in a criminal case as to whether there is any reason for the court not to proceed to judgment.
