Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin allocūt-, alloquī.
Etymology: < classical Latin allocūt-, past participial stem of alloquī to address, speak to, to make a speech (to) < al- , variant of ad- ad- prefix + loquī to speak (see loquent adj.). Compare earlier allocution n.
intransitive. To deliver an allocution; to make a formal address or speech (in later use esp. in court; cf. allocution n. 4). Also transitive: to address formally.
