allochroousadj. Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin allochrous , -ous suffix; Greek ἀλλόχροος , -ous suffix. Etymology: < scientific Latin allochrous (1792 or earlier) or its etymon ancient Greek ἀλλόχροος (contracted ἀλλόχρους) changed in colour ( < ἀλλο- allo- comb. form + -χροος -coloured < χρώς colour < the same base as χρῶμα colour: see chrome n.) + -ous suffix. Compare French allochroé (1837 or earlier; now rare). N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ̆lǫ·kroˌəs) /æˈlɒkrəʊəs/. rare. 1846 5 152 Allochrous. Changing from one colour to another. 1987 D. Brin 383 In some places the allochroous feathers had begun to appear frayed, tattered.
