Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Allocheirie.
Etymology: < German Allocheirie (H. Obersteiner 1880, in Wiener med. Wochenschr. 10 Dec. 1401/2; also Allochirie (1881 or earlier)) < German allo- allo- comb. form + ancient Greek χείρ hand (see cheiro- comb. form) + German -ie -y suffix3. Compare French allochirie (1881 or earlier; 1884 or earlier as allocheirie; < German).
Medicine.
Originally: a condition in which a person is unable to determine on which side of the body a stimulus has been applied. In later use: spec. a condition in which a stimulus applied or presented to one side of the body is perceived as occurring on the opposite side.Allochiria has been reported in various conditions affecting the brain and spinal cord, esp. in association with lesions affecting the right parietal lobe, and in hysteria.
