Etymology: < Latin distichon, < Greek δίστιχον distich, couplet (neuter of δίστιχος adjective: see distich adj.), < δι- (di- comb. form) + στίχος row, line of verse. At first used in the Latin form. The plural distiches apparently points to an obsolete pronunciation /ˈdɪstɪtʃ/.

A couple of lines of verse, usually making complete sense, and (in modern poetry) rhyming; a couplet.
