Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Partly a borrowing from German. Etymons: French amptman; Dutch amptman; German amptman, Amtmann.
Etymology: Partly (i) < Middle French, French †amptman, denoting a bailiff or other officer in the Netherlands (originally in the Spanish Netherlands) (1568 or earlier; < Dutch); partly (ii) < Dutch †amptman (Old Dutch ambahtman , Middle Dutch ambtman , amptman , amtman ; < Old Dutch ambaht (see amboht n. and compare amt n.1) + man man n.1); and partly (iii) < early modern German amptman, amtman, German Amtmann (Old High German ambahtman , Middle High German ambetman , ammetman , amtman ; < Old High German ambaht (see amboht n. and compare amt n.1) + man man n.1). In Scandinavian contexts (e.g. quots. 1709, 1863) apparently after parallel compounds in Scandinavian languages; compare Swedish amtman (1612; also †amptman (1621)), Danish amtmand (1683 or earlier), and Icelandic amtmaður (late 17th cent.).In plural form Amtmänner (compare quot. 2008) after the German plural form.
