Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit amṛta.

Etymology: < Sanskrit amṛta (also with vernacular pronunciation amṛt), use as noun of amṛta immortal < a- un- prefix¹ + mṛta dead, use as adjective of the past participle of mṛ- to die (see murder n.¹). Compare the similarly-formed ancient Greek ἄμβροτος immortal (see ambrosia n.).The form amreeta at β. forms apparently goes back to a transliteration system used by C. Wilkins (compare quot. 1785), where ĕĕ is used to represent a short vowel /ɪ/ (as opposed to ēē /iː/).
