单词 ampyx
释义

ampyxn.

Brit. /ˈampɪks/, U.S. /ˈæmpɪks/
Inflections: Plural ampyxes, (rare) ampyces, (rare) ampykes.
Forms: 1600s ampix, 1700s– ampyx, 1800s– ampux.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin ampyx; Greek ἄμπυξ.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin ampyx (also amphix) (1535 or earlier), or its etymon (ii) ancient Greek ἄμπυξ metal diadem worn by women on the forehead, horse's headstall, of unknown origin; perhaps a loanword (see note).Ancient Greek ἄμπυξ was formerly considered to derive from ἀνα- ana- prefix (with omission of the final vowel) + -πυξ < the same Indo-European base as Avestan pusā crown; perhaps also related to ancient Greek πύκα (adverb) thickly, solidly (see pycno- comb. form), but this has now been discounted on formal and semantic grounds. In plural forms ampyces, ampykes after the Latin and Greek plural forms.
Ancient Greek History.
