Etymology: < classical Latin dominium ownership, specific sense development of dominium rule, dominion < dominus lord (see domine n.) + -ium (see -y suffix4). Compare dominion n.In dominium directum < post-classical Latin dominium directum (14th cent.); in dominium utile < post-classical Latin dominium utile (14th cent.). Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: doˈminium.
A Latin term of the Roman Law, variously rendered lordship, ownership, property, demesne, domain, dominion; but often retained in Latin form in legal use.
