A passageway or space between two doors, typically an inner and outside door. Also: a door between two others, a middle door. Also in plural in the same sense. ΚΠ a1804 J. Boucher Suppl. Dr. Johnson's Dict. (1807) at Amell Amell-duirs, or deers; which phrase signifies the passage betwixt two doors, in a Cumberland farm-house, built according to the old style of building. 1856 R. Ferguson Northmen in Cumberland & Westmoreland ix. 167 The ‘mell-door’ or ‘amell-door’ in a Cumberland farm-house is the space or passage between the inner and outer doors. 1868 J. C. Atkinson Gloss.
