Forms: 1500s–1600s amelcorne, 1500s–1600s amilcorne, 1600s amellcorn, 1600s amellcorne, 1600s– amelcorn, 1800s amilcorn.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from German. Or (ii) a borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: German Ammelkorn; Dutch amelkoren.
Etymology: Either (i) < German (now rare) Ammelkorn (1554 as ammelkorne in a Dutch context in the passage translated in quot. 1578), or (ii) < Dutch (now regional: West Flanders) amelkoren (1543 as amelcoren ), respectively < German (now rare) Ammel (Middle High German amel ) and Dutch amel , variants of German Emmer and Dutch emer (for both, see emmer n.) + respectively German Korn and Dutch koren (for both, see corn n.1).
Now rare.
Any of several types or varieties of awned wheat having a high starch content, esp. the primitive wheat emmer, Triticum turgidum dicoccum. Cf. bearded wheat n. at bearded adj. Compounds 2, starch corn (a) at starch n. Compounds 3.
