Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from German. Or (ii) a borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: German Ammelkorn; Dutch amelkoren.

Etymology: Either (i) < German (now rare) Ammelkorn (1554 as ammelkorne in a Dutch context in the passage translated in quot. 1578), or (ii) < Dutch (now regional: West Flanders) amelkoren (1543 as amelcoren ), respectively < German (now rare) Ammel (Middle High German amel ) and Dutch amel , variants of German Emmer and Dutch emer (for both, see emmer n.) + respectively German Korn and Dutch koren (for both, see corn n.¹).

Now rare.
