Etymology: < (i) French amélanchier medlar tree (1549 in Middle Frenchː also 1797 or earlier as amelancier), and its etymon (ii) Occitan amalenquièr, amalenchièr < amalenca , amalencha , denoting the fruit of the tree ( > French amélanche (1721; probably < an unattested derivative < Gaulish aballo- apple: see apple n.)) + -ier -ier suffix. Compare Franco-Provençal (Savoy) amelanquier (1549). See further Französisches etymol.
