Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin discontinuus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin discontinuus not continuous, interrupted (from 13th cent. in British sources; from 15th cent. in continental sources) < classical Latin dis- dis- prefix + continuus (see continuous adj.). Compare Middle French, French discontinu (a1372; 1784 or earlier in the specific mathematical use designating a function), Spanish discontinuo (1437), Italian discontinuo (a1519). Compare earlier discontinual adj., discontinuate adj.
