Etymology: < dis- prefix + confidence n., after Spanish desconfiança (second half of the 15th cent.; now desconfianza ). Compare Portuguese desconfiança (15th cent.). Compare later disconfide v., disconfident adj.
Lack of confidence; doubt; distrust. Also: an instance of this.
