Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin amburbiālis.
Etymology: < classical Latin amburbiālis of or relating to an expiatory procession round the city (attested in an 8th-cent. epitome of a 2nd-cent. grammarian) < amburbium expiatory procession round the city (in the same source; < amb- round, about (see ambi- prefix) + urb- , urbs city (see urban adj.) + -ium : see -y suffix4) + -ālis -al suffix1. Of or relating to a type of expiatory procession, in which an animal was paraded around the boundaries of the city of Rome before being sacrificed.
