Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ambulones.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin ambulones, plural of ambulon-, ambulo (1509 or earlier) < classical Latin ambulāre ambulate v. + (see -oon suffix).
Obsolete.
With plural agreement. In folklore: ghosts or spirits said to waylay travellers and play tricks on them. Also occasionally: will-o'-the-wisps (will-o'-the-wisp n. 1a).
