Etymology: Probably < German Ambulatorium outpatients' department (1822 or earlier in this sense; 1802 or earlier in the sense ‘covered walkway in a monastery, cloister’) < post-classical Latin ambulatorium ambulatory n.; use of the German word in the medical sense is probably after post-classical Latin clinicum ambulatorium (1796 or earlier in a German source).In later use partly after Russian ambulatorija outpatients' department, dispensary (1859 or earlier; probably < German Ambulatorium ; compare slightly earlier ambulatornaja klinika (1858 or earlier), literally ‘ambulatory clinic’). Compare ambulatory n. In plural ambulatoria after the Latin plural form.
A clinic providing outpatient treatment or primary care.Originally used in German contexts, later often in relation to the Soviet Union. The term is not used of such clinics in the English-speaking world.
