释义

discolithn.

Brit. /ˈdɪskə(ʊ)lɪθ/, U.S. /ˈdɪskoʊˌlɪθ/, /ˈdɪskəˌlɪθ/

Etymology: < disco- comb. form + -lith comb. form, after scientific Latin Discolithus (Huxley: see quot. 1868).Huxley's word, originally a morphological descriptive term, was subsequently treated as a genus name for a fossil alga, but in this context it had already been used for a foraminiferan ( A. Fortis Mémoires histoire naturelle de l'Italie II. (1802)) and was replaced by the name Discolithina.
Biology.
Any coccolith with a more or less discoid shape, often with a thickened or elevated rim surrounding a central area which may be perforated (cf. cyatholith n.).

1868 T. H. Huxley in Q. Jrnl. Microsc. Sci. 8 206 I find that two distinct kinds of bodies have been described by myself and others under the name of coccoliths. I shall term one kind Discolithus, and the other Cyatholithus.]
1871 Q. Jrnl. Microsc. Sci. 11 62 Haeckel points out that there are circular discoliths as well as oval ones, which alone were described by Huxley..[and] that the cyatholiths are simply two discoliths united by an axial piece.
1973 N.Z. Jrnl. Geol. & Geophysics 16 71 Natural groupings within the coccolithophorids sensu stricto are reflected..by the major types of coccolith they produce (e.g. caneoliths, discoliths, placoliths, etc.) during the nonmotile phase of their life cycle.
