Etymology: < dis- prefix + cognizance n., after Middle French descognoissance, descongnoissance ignorance (c1260 in Old French as desquenoissance; 13th cent. in Old French as desconnoissance in sense ‘ingratitude’). Compare Old Occitan desconoisensa ignorance, ingratitude, Spanish †desconocencia ingratitude (first half of the 15th cent. as descoñosçençia).
Obsolete (archaic and rare in later use).
Ignorance; lack of recognition. Also: an instance of this.
