Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin ambūbēia, ambūbāia.
Etymology: < classical Latin ambūbēia (also ambūbāia) wild endive (Celsus, Pliny), probably < ambūbāia (Syrian) flute-girl and courtesan (see below), so called punningly, as the plant was also called intubus (see intube n.); compare classical Latin tībia flute (see tibia n.) and tuba trumpet (see tuba n.1).Compare Italian †ambubeia wild endive, also dandelion (1557 in Mattioli's translation of Dioscorides, or earlier). Classical Latin ambūbāia ‘(Syrian) flute-girl’ is < an unattested derivative of Aramaic 'abbūbā, emphatic form of 'abbūb reed, flute, pipe, tube.
Obsolete. rare.
A type of endive, (perhaps) common chicory, Cichorium intybus.
