Etymology: < classical Latin allium (also ālium) garlic, of unknown origin. In later use reborrowed < scientific Latin Allium, genus name ( Linnaeus1753) I. 294), specific use of classical Latin allium.Earlier examples such as the following, where the word is glossed in an English context, should probably be regarded as showing the Latin word:a1398 J. Originally: garlic. In later use (more widely): any plant of the genus Allium (family Amaryllidaceae), comprising bulbous plants native chiefly to temperate regions of the Northern hemisphere, which typically have a distinctive pungent aroma, and include various edible crop and garden plants such as garlic, onion, leek, and shallot, and also numerous kinds grown for their ornamental umbels; (also, in form Allium) the genus itself.In quot. 1600 showing a mistranslation of classical Latin Allia, denoting a tributary of the Tiber (at which the Gauls defeated the Romans in 390 b.c.), which the translator interprets as meaning ‘garlic’.
