Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin discīdere.
Etymology: < classical Latin discīdere (rare) to cut in pieces < dis- dis- prefix + caedere to cut down (see caesura n.). In later use probably after discind v., discission n. 2.
rare after 17th cent.
transitive. To cut up; to cut off or away. In later use chiefly Ophthalmology: to perform discission upon (the lens of the eye, a cataract, etc.). Cf. discission n., discind v.Frequently figurative in early use.
