2. Anglican Church. Of a benefice: that is exempt from the payment of first fruits and tenths, or first fruits only (see first fruit n. 3, tenth n. 1b). Cf. discharge v. 3.Such benefices originally became exempt following valuation at under £10 in Henry VIII’s Valor Ecclesiasticus (1534). This was succeeded by various measures to exempt poor benefices from taxation from the Tudor period to the time of Queen Anne.
