Etymology: < (i) Middle French disceptation discussion, debate (a1365), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin disceptātiōn-, disceptātiō (in post-classical Latin also desceptatio , 16th cent. in British sources) dispute, debate, arbitration, judgement < disceptāt- , past participial stem of disceptāre discept v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare disception n.Compare earlier deceptation , probably < post-classical Latin deceptation- , deceptatio (from 12th cent. in British sources), alteration (with suffix substitution: see de- prefix) of classical Latin disceptātiōn-, disceptātiō:c1384 Bible (Wycliffite, E.V.)
