Etymology: apparently < obsolete Italian dispedire , (spedire ) to dispatch (Florio), < dis- prefix 1a; a parallel form to Latin ex-pedīre , im-pedīre (see expede v., impede v.). But, as the spelling shows, associated in English use with speed n.: compare also the parallel form despeed v.
