Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: dis- prefix, articulation n.
Etymology: < dis- prefix + articulation n., after Italian disarticolazione (1804 in the passage translated in quot. 1808 at sense 1). Compare disarticulate v.Compare French désarticulation (1807 or earlier in anatomy, 20th cent. in general sense ‘action of separating the constituent elements of something’).
1. The action of removing a limb or part of a limb at a joint; the process of undergoing detachment at a joint or joints; an instance of this. Cf. disarticulate v. 1a.In surgery, disarticulation was originally distinguished from amputation in that it does not require division of a bone, but amputation is now typically used in a broader sense to include both techniques.
