Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps originally modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: all adv., good adj.
Etymology: < all adv. + good adj., perhaps originally after Dutch algoede (1554 in Dodoens, cited as a less common alternative name for goede hendrik good Henry n.; compare quot. 1578), itself probably after either post-classical Latin tota bona (1554 in Dodoens, or earlier; also 1543 or earlier denoting a kind of clary) or its apparent etymon Middle French, French toute-bonne (1554 in Dodoens, or earlier; also a1394 denoting a kind of clary).
Now chiefly historical.
The perennial goosefoot, Chenopodium bonus-henricus (family Chenopodiaceae (or Amaranthaceae)), which has edible leaves and shoots and was formerly used as a vegetable and for medicinal purposes; also called Good King Henry, English mercury.
