单词 altumal
释义

altumaladj.

Brit. /ˈaltjᵿml/, /ˈɔːltjᵿml/, U.S. /ˈæltjəm(ə)l/, /ˈɑltjəm(ə)l/
Origin: Perhaps (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or perhaps (ii) a borrowing from Dutch; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin altum , -al suffix1; Dutch altemaal.
Etymology: Perhaps (i) irregularly < classical Latin altum the deep, the sea, use as noun of neuter of altus high, deep (see altus n.) + -al suffix1; or perhaps (ii) < Dutch †altemaal (adverb) with everything taken together, altogether, completely (Middle Dutch altemal ; < al all adj. + temale altogether, completely ( < te to prep. + male time, instance, iteration: see meal n.2)), with alteration or reinterpretation after classical Latin altum.Compare the following apparent examples of the Dutch word borrowed into English:1699 B. E. New Dict. Canting Crew Altemall, altogether.1785 F. Grose Classical Dict. Vulgar Tongue Altamel, vide Dutch reckoning, a verbal or lump account, without particulars.1859 G. W. Matsell Vocabulum 8 Altemal, all in a heap, without items; the sum total. Compare also the following example which shows the form alltumal, but discusses a kind of account:1710 S. Clement Vindic. Faults on both Sides 19 This would have fix'd me in an Opinion that the Alltumal account of 6d¾ per man per Diem, [submitted by a certain Admiral, was] trick'd up to deceive.
slang. rare and archaic after 18th cent.
Of or relating to sailors or the sea; nautical. The 18th cent. quots. suggest rather the sense ‘mercantile, commercial’; O'Brian may have based his use on the mention of ‘tars’.
