Etymology: < scientific Latin Altrices (C. J. Sundevall 1836, in Kungl. Svenska Vetenskapsakademien handlingar 1835 70 (see note), plural of classical Latin altrīc- , altrīx foster mother, wet nurse, feminine form corresponding to altor nourisher; < alt- , past participial stem of alere to nourish (see aliment n.) + -trīx -trix suffix) + -ial suffix.Scientific Latin Altrices was introduced by Sundevall as the name of one of the two divisions into which he divided birds (the other being the Praecoces), but which were later abandoned by him.

Chiefly Ornithology.

Of a young bird or (in later use also) other animal: confined to the nest, burrow, etc., until sufficiently developed to live without parental care. Also: (of a species) bearing young of this kind; nidicolous. Contrasted with precocial.In quot. 1869 referring to Sundevall's orders (see etymology note).
