Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French alto-stratus.
Etymology: < French alto-stratus (1875 or earlier) < classical Latin altus high (see altus n.) + French -o- -o- connective + stratus stratus n.; compare stratus elevée (1853 or earlier). Compare earlier cirro-stratus n. at cirro- comb. form 2. Compare also altocumulus n.
Meteorology.
Cloud forming a continuous uniform layer which resembles stratus but occurs at medium altitude (typically 6,500 to 23,000 ft, 2 to 7 km). Frequently attributive.
