Etymology: < classical Latin discrīminant-, discrīmināns, present participle of discrīmināre discriminate v. Compare earlier discriminance n., discriminate adj.The term was introduced in sense B. 1 in 1851 by J. J. Sylvester as an alternative to determinant , a term which had been introduced (in scientific Latin) by Gauss in this sense ( Disquisitiones arithmeticae (1801) XV. 2), but which had come to be used with a different emphasis (compare determinant n. 3).
