A literary style which attempts a gritty and unidealized depiction of contemporary life; (in later use) spec. a genre of (chiefly U.S.) fiction concerned with the experiences of the disaffected or disadvantaged, characterized by downbeat stories esp. of small-town life, written in stark, direct (though often highly stylized) language, sometimes intended to shock.
