Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin altisonus , -ant suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin altisonus that sounds high up or in the heavens ( < alti- alti- comb. form + -sonus sounding < sonus sound: see sound n.3) + -ant suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin altisonare to sound loudly (12th cent. in a British source). Compare Middle French altissonant (of God) having a loud voice (c1480), (of a flute) having a high or strong sound (1545), also Italian altisonante loud, vain (both 17th cent.), all rare. Compare earlier consonant adj., resonant adj., etc., and later altisonous adj.
Now rare.
