单词 altimeter
释义

altimetern.

Brit. /ˈaltᵻmiːtə/, /ˈɔːltᵻmiːtə/, /ˈɒltᵻmiːtə/, U.S. /ælˈtɪmədər/, /ɑlˈtɪmədər/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Perhaps also partly formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Latin altimeter ; alti- comb. form, -meter comb. form2.
Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin altimeter instrument for measuring height (1540 or earlier; also quoted by Du Cange from Papias (11th cent.); compare altimeter , adjective (1532 in gnomon altimeter , 1535 in scala altimetra , or earlier)) < classical Latin alti- alti- comb. form + -meter -meter comb. form2. In later use (in sense 2) perhaps directly < alti- comb. form + -meter comb. form2. Compare Middle French altimètre (adjective) (of a scale) designed to measure vertical height (1562), French altimètre (noun) instrument for measuring vertical extents or angles (1803), instrument which indicates the altitude above sea level of the bearer (1922), and also Spanish altimetro, adjective (late 16th cent.; 19th cent. as noun). N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ̆lti·mĭtəɹ) /ælˈtɪmɪtə(r)/.
1. An instrument for measuring vertical extents or angles (cf. altitude n. 1, 4). Now rare.
