Etymology: < Middle French descouverture (14th cent.) < descouvert discovert adj. + -ure -ure suffix1, after couverture coverture n. Compare Old Occitan descobertura , Spanish †descobertura (c1400), all in sense ‘discovery’, and also post-classical Latin discoopertura act of laying something bare, clearing of land (13th cent.; from 14th cent. in British sources), disclosure (from 14th cent. in British sources). Compare discovering n. and adj. at discover v. Derivatives.
