Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin alternitas.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin alternitas alternateness, alternation (5th or 6th cent. in Priscian) < classical Latin alternus altern adj. + -itās -ity suffix. In sense 2 rendering Welsh proest (14th cent. in the source translated in quot. 1856 at sense 2; of unknown origin).
