Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French diphthérite.

Etymology: < French diphthérite (now diphtérite ; 1825 or earlier: see below), with (in α. forms) remodelling of the ending after words in -itis suffix. Compare later diphtheria n.French diphthérite was coined by P. F. Bretonneau (perhaps c1821), though it is first attested in his publications slightly later: P. F. Bretonneau Des inflammations spéciales du tissu muqueux, et en particulier de la diphthérite, ou inflammation pelliculaire (1826). It is formed < ancient Greek διϕθέρα or its derivative Hellenistic Greek διϕθερίς skin, hide, piece of leather + French -ite -itis suffix; ancient Greek διϕθέρα is of uncertain origin, perhaps < δέψειν to knead (see depside n.), perhaps showing a formation in -ταρ (compare νέκταρ nectar n.).

Medicine. Now rare.
