Etymology: Originally (i) < Dutch dinges item or person whose name the speaker does not know, thingummy (1784 as dings ), either < German Dings , in the same sense (16th cent. or earlier, specific use of the genitive singular of Ding thing n.¹) or < Dutch ding thing n.¹ + -es , derivative suffix forming nouns denoting kinds of people, etc. (compare e.g. lobbes large dog, simpleton: see lob n.²).
