Etymology: < Danish Allerød (1908 in Allerød-Oscillation, or earlier) < the name of Allerød, an administrative district near Copenhagen, Denmark, in which the type site is located.The site (the clay pit of a brickworks) was investigated from 1897, and the results were published in 1901 by N. Hartz and V. Milthers ( Meddelelser fra Dansk geologisk Forening 8 31–60; compare quot. 1919). This publication does not use the place name to denote the interstadial period. The form Alleröd reflects the spelling of both the place name and the geological term in German.

Ecology and Climatology.

(The name of) a warmer period (interstadial) during the late glacial period in Europe, occurring between the Older and the Younger Dryas, about 14,000 to 13,000 years ago, and marked by the spread of birch, willow, and pine. Usually attributive, esp. in Allerød interstadial, Allerød oscillation.
