Primary stress is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: French -stome, Latin -stoma; Greek στόμα.
Etymology: < French -stome, scientific Latin -stoma (in e.g. Rhizostoma rhizostome n.), and their etymon ancient Greek στόμα mouth (see stoma n.). Compare ancient Greek adjectives ending in -στομος , designating a mouth, speech, etc., of the type specified by the first element, e.g. πολύστομος polystome adj.Found from the end of the 18th cent. (e.g. peristome n.), chiefly in adaptations of Latin or French words (for a possible exception see pterygostome n.).
