Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: centre n.1, -ic suffix.
Etymology: < centre n.1 + -ic suffix. With use in sense 1 compare post-classical Latin -centricus (formations in which are found from the early 15th cent.), French -centrique (formations in which are found from the late 17th cent.), and also concentric adj., eccentric adj.Formations within English are found from the 17th cent. in sense 1, becoming numerous in the 19th cent., and from the end of the 19th cent. in sense 2.

Forming adjectives with the sense ‘having a centre of a specified type’, as polycentric adj., or with the sense ‘having a specified centre; having a specified subject, group, etc., as a priority, focus, or basis’, as anthropocentric adj., egocentric adj., ethnocentric adj., Eurocentric adj., heliocentric adj., technocentric adj., etc.
