Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French allemande, allemand.
Etymology: < French allemande kind of court dance in duple time (1515 in Middle French as alemande ), also used to denote a piece of music to accompany this dance or written in the same style (1570), type of white sauce (1811 or earlier), use as noun of feminine of allemand German (see Almain n.). In allemande sauce and sauce allemande at sense 3 after French sauce allemande (1767 or earlier); compare also sauce à l'allemande (1739 or earlier). With senses 2 and 1 compare earlier Almain n. 2.With sense 1 compare also the following early use of the French word in an English context, although this apparently shows the name of one particular dance:1521 R. Copland in A. Barclay Introd. Frenche f. 16v Bace daunces...La allemande. thre measures..ss.ddd.r.b. Unparfyte. N.E.D.
