dialling tone n. chiefly British a sound produced in a telephone indicating that the line is in order and the caller can start dialling.Before the introduction of automatic exchanges, no dialling tone was heard; rather, the caller would speak to an operator, who would connect the call on his or her behalf. Dialling tones are not used in mobile telephony.
