Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Allelopathie.
Etymology: < German Allelopathie ( H. Molisch Der Einfluss einer Pflanze auf die andere—Allelopathie (1937)) < ancient Greek ἀλλή́λο- , combining form (in e.g. ἀλληλοκτονεῖν to slay one another) of ἀλλή́λων (genitive plural) one another (formed from repetition of ἄλλος other: see allo- comb. form) + German -pathie -pathy comb. form. Compare Hellenistic Greek ἀλληλοπάθεια subjection to mutual influence.
Ecology.
The deleterious process by which one organism (esp. a plant) influences others nearby through the escape or release of toxic or inhibitory substances into the environment.
