Etymology: Apparently an alteration of dialectic n.¹ after nouns in -ics denoting branches of knowledge (see -ic suffix 2), and probably also after classical Latin dialectica, neuter plural. Compare slightly later dialectic adj.In sense 2b after German Dialektik dialectic n.¹ (1873 (in the 2nd German edition of Das Kapital, the source translated in quot. 1887) or earlier in this sense; earlier uses by Marx and Engels, from at least 1844, refer to Hegelian dialectics).
