Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin allegoricus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin allegoricus (late 2nd cent. in Tertullian) < ancient Greek ἀλληγορικός < ἀλληγορία allegory n. + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare Middle French allegorique , alegoricque , French allégorique (15th cent. or earlier). Compare later allegorical adj., and slightly earlier allegory n.
