Origin: An imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Imitative. In sense 2 probably partly suggested or reinforced by similarity to laugh v. and to ha ha int.Originally found in both senses in cartoons and comic strips.
1. Representing the bark of a (small) dog, or a human imitation of such a bark. Usually repeated in arf arf, etc. Cf. bow-wow int. and n., woof int. and n.2 1.
