Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin -staticus; Greek -στατικός.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin -staticus (in e.g. apostaticus apostatic adj.) and its etymon ancient Greek -στατικός (in e.g. ἀποστατικός ) < στατικός causing to stand, stopping (see static adj.).Attested earliest in the 16th and 17th centuries in loans from Latin and Greek, e.g. apostatic adj., ecstatic adj., systatic adj. Formations within English are found from the mid 17th cent., e.g. aerostatic adj.

b. A terminal element of adjectives denoting pressure, as isostatic adj., manostatic adj.
2. A terminal element of adjectives denoting an absence of motion, change, or growth, or the production or maintenance of this, as aerostatic adj., astatic adj., fungistatic adj., geostatic adj., glucostatic adj.
3. A terminal element of adjectives denoting posture or position, as orthostatic adj.
